You can't do this with HTML alone. Depending on your server configuration, you may be able to use a .htpasswd file for this; otherwise, you'll have to use server-side scripts in a language such as PHP.

you can also have host install the frontpage extensions even if you do not use frontpage they include ready made .htaccess controlled folders. With a little creativity you can modify or just move your content to reside within one of them
